Fun Audio Activities for Seniors

In days gone by radio was big. Seniors will remember it well. Now we call it Old Time Radio!

When radio was big, just before TV, families used to gather in the living rooms and sitting rooms where they would grab a comfortable pillow, spot on the floor, some knitting or mending to do, and they would listen to radio shows and performances we now call The Classics of Old Time Radio.

  • Laurel and Hardy
  • Amos and Andy
  • Gunsmoke
  • Tales of the Texas Rangers
  • Evening with George Burns
  • The Danny Kaye Show
  • Radio City Playhouse
  • and many, many more!

  • The choices are numerous and sure to bring back special memories and some new laughs to a lost form of entertainment that the seniors in your care will surely appreciate. It is also a wonderful activity for those with visual impairments or those that are too ill or bed ridden to join in some other activities.

Assisted Living: Fun and Stimulating Men's Activities

Men's activities can seem difficult to come up with to keep them occupied, stimulated and interested. Men don’t usually care to do some activities that women love to do, or not for that long. Tea parties, cooking and baking, even bingo and crafts can begin to bore some of the men who would like more masculine things to do and talk about.

But just as women love to talk about the ingredients in a fruit cake, men still love to talk about whatever has interested them. Usually politics, sports and various hobbies they may have had from years ago such as hunting or fishing.

An honorable quality built into most people is the desire to share knowledge and experience. Although the seniors may have less memory recall and less agility they have had many life experiences and knowledge that they would like to share. Sharing with younger people can be very stimulating to the elderly, particularly if the youth are responsive and respectful.

Can Artisans Remain Inspired in Senior Living Communities?

Dedicated quilter? Woodworker? Jewelry maker? While the majority of senior living communities offer a varied roster of activities so that residents can enjoy pastimes that suit their preferences, many aging adults have concerns that they won’t be able to find a community that truly supports their avocation or artistic interests.

What if you’re a theatre actor, but nowhere close to retiring from the stage? What if you’re a writer with no intention of putting down the pen just because you’ve reached retirement age? Seniors who want to downsize or who find themselves suddenly alone after years of marriage can find it daunting to think about trying to identify and nestle into a new community that sustains their longtime vocation.

We Care Online Staff Highlight - Patsy Cline

This month we meet Patsy Cline

Patsy Cline has been in the healthcare field for 25 years.  She was originally attracted to the field by her love of working with patients and her desire to make a difference in people's lives.

Patsy lives in Wichita, Kansas with Jack, her husband of 51 years.  The Clines have 3 adult boys and many grandchildren.

Patsy and her husband attend church on a regular basis.  Patsy also enjoys making cards, scrapbooking, sewing, and home decorating.

Everyone at WeCareOnline plays an important role in helping students have the best online learning experience possible.  Patsy works in the business office and is responsible for making deposits and receiving payments from students and facilities.

Patsy also approves Hardship Grants and states that “WeCareOnline offers between   $5,000.00 to $6,000.00 per month at no cost to the student except for the price of the textbook.  This is so rewarding.”

Since WeCareOnline is an online company, Patsy knows that people don’t get to see her face to face or to see her workspace. She has a wall plaque that hangs in front of her desk and reads:

If you can talk...You can SING!
If you can walk...You can DANCE!

Patsy comments that this message “… inspires me to be the best I can be, and maintain a positive attitude.”

    Music Brings Memory

The aide who answered the phone in the Alzheimer's unit shouted, "Woody, you've got a phone call!" I heard the clattering as he grasped the handset, followed by his whistle, a nervous habit he acquired over the past few years. "It's Mary Ellen, your daughter," I said. Then I hummed him a note, as if I were giving him a cue from the pitch pipe--and began to sing Henry Mancini's "Moon River." By the second note, he was...read the rest of the story.
