The magic numbers for a healthy target blood pressure (BP) reading used
to be 120/80. In 2003, that was reviewed and changed by a panel of
medical experts, with a higher range determined to be within normal
limits. High blood pressure (hypertension) was then defined as 140/90 or
above, particularly for older adults 60 or over.
Those individuals with
hypertension were advised to take medication(s) to keep their readings
within that range. People with diabetes or kidney disease have lower
target numbers (130/80) due to being at higher risk.
