12 Habits to Adopt to Create Immediate Growth

January may well be the month of good intentions for leaders everywhere. Whether it is going to the gym more, improving your sleep or perhaps a far fetch goal you have repeatedly stated on December 31 that has always dissipated by the end of January.
Instead of following a similar futile pattern for your focus in 2016, make this the year you are going to be more intentional about where you spend your time, your energy and your resources. Follow these 12 habits that successful leaders adopt to create explosive growth in their business:
1. Spend one third on the future
Spend 30 percent of your time on how your business will be in 1-2 years.

2. Pretend you are going on a sabbatical
Delegate away all of your responsibilities as though you were taking a three-month sabbatical. Now focus only on strategic long-term projects.

3. Tell your team the truth
Be honest with your direct team about their future potential and how you can develop them.

       4. Stop delaying changing out your team

Time: How to Make the Most of Your Most Valuable Asset

Time is something we all wish we had more of, but it’s unfortunately a finite resource. Whether you’re trying to be less flaky, or you can’t seem to ever be on time for anything, it can help to remember that time is valuable for everyone.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in your own little world where the only thing that matters is your schedule, but that’s not so when it comes to work, friends, and other important obligations. Sara Kyle, founder and managing director at Vault Collective suggests you think of timeliness a little differently
Remember that time is everyone’s most valuable asset, not just yours. Being respectful of other people’s time will help you gain respect . . . and your reputation is everything.

Kids Asking For a Pet? Six Reasons to Say Yes

There's nothing more adorable than a kid with a puppy, knowing they'll grow up together and become inseparable friends. Far from just being cute, there are also very real health and social benefits that come along with growing up with a pet.

Here are six benefits to raising a kid with a furry friend:

1. Pets teach responsibility.

Having a pet is a lot of work. Any kind of animal a family chooses is going to need to be fed and cleaned up after. Most pet choices will require exercise and plenty of attention to make sure it has a happy, healthy life. Taking an active role in the daily duties surrounding caring for a pet will teach children responsibility for these essential tasks.

How To Avoid Drug Interactions with the Elderly

Polypharmacy refers to the taking of multiple drugs by a single patient. Doctors and clinicians usually use this term to refer to a problem which develops as a result of taking multiple drugs. As more and more drugs are being developed to treat diseases and conditions associated with aging and to potentially even extend life, clinicians are observing an increasing number of drug interactions as well as an increase in potentially adverse health-related problems due to these interactions.

Not surprisingly, it is the elderly who are most affected by polypharmacy, as older adults account for the bulk of prescriptions sales. However, prescription medications are only part of the problem. To prevent side effects caused by these interactions, patients, pharmacists and physicians must work collaboratively to regularly review the patient’s entire medication list.

There are many factors which contribute to this polypharmacy problems. Following are five of the most common contributing factors:

Multiple doctors and pharmacists. Many seniors have more than one doctor involved in their care.

Today: Change Your Life With Healthy Eating Habits

Eat the rainbow
Nutrition experts dole out a ton of advice about how to eat well—and, most importantly, not lose your mind doing it. But there are some tips that stand the test of time, and that experts themselves follow. (Because, yes, they’re human, too.) Here are 10 habits they live by and that will change the way you eat.

Don’t give anything up
Eat all the foods you enjoy—but the key is to do it in smaller quantities, says Elisa Zied, RDN, who has lost and kept off more than 30 pounds since her highest weight in high school. In fact, she says it’s the number-one change she made that’s helped her maintain her smaller frame. “I didn’t want to feel deprived as I had in previous attempts to lose weight,” she says. The worst thing you can do is be too strict, then rebound by overeating because you’re not satisfied.

Always have a plan
It’s easy to get sucked into the lure of the restaurant menu when you’re hungry and everything looks good.

The Skinny on Subscription Snack Boxes - The Latest Craze

They call it the fourth meal.

For many, snacking is the number one cause for derailed diets, unintentional calorie overloading and an increase in sugar or salt intake. But the snack is often the saving grace of the work day – the only problem is most of us are left with limited choices at the office vending machine.
Enter the subscription snack box – the latest online food craze that has businesses big and small betting on people looking for healthier snack options.

Silicon Valley-based company NatureBox has been leading the charge on the healthy snack front since its launch in 2012.

The idea for the company was born, in part, out of CEO and co-founder Gautam Gupta’s struggle with obesity. After teaching himself about nutrition and exercise in high school, Gupta lost 70 pounds, but struggled with finding snack options he felt good about eating when on the go.

“Twenty-five per cent of our daily calories come from snacking and we’ve found people will often say they don’t feel satisfied after they snack,” said NatureBox spokesperson Nicki Briggs. “So we thought it was a really big opportunity to make a difference.”

Pregnancy and Motherhood: Women's Brains Permanently Altered?

Pregnancy and motherhood has been found to permanently alter a woman’s brains, specifically how it and the body may react to future treatments or hormones later in life, a recent study says.
Researchers wanted to see how women who had given birth to children would respond to “estrogen hormone treatments, which are often prescribed to treat brain disorders in middle-aged and older women,” reported CTV News.

They tested rats who had experienced motherhood, as well as rats who hadn’t and found the estrogen treatment improved the learning of those rats that had been mothers, but impaired the learning of the other rats.

“Our most recent research shows that previous motherhood alters cognition and neuroplasticity in response to hormone therapy, demonstrating that motherhood permanently alters the brain,” said Liisa Galea, head researcher of the study.

Being aware of how women’s bodies may react to certain hormones in brain treatments could aid in knowing what will or won’t actually help, or what could be dangerous with treatments.

How to Give Your Working Memory a Tune-up

Working memory is like your brain's scratch pad, managing information as you go about your day. But our routine deluge of information can make us feel scatterbrained, like our working memory has too much to deal with. Here's how to tune-up your working memory and stay focused.
This post originally appeared on the Crew blog.

Sometimes when I'm trying to focus on a single task my mind can feel a bit like a pinball machine. No matter how hard I try to keep my thoughts in focus there's all these ideas wildly bouncing around and beating away at my limited attention.

Our brains can be fickle things and I'm sure every last one of us has experienced moments where we just can't seem to hold on to an idea for more than a few seconds.

All of a sudden while you're working on a project you start thinking about what you're going to make for dinner or a conversation you had with a friend a few nights ago. It's frustrating. All we want to do is focus on what we're working on and block out the rest. So how come these unwanted thoughts keep coming into our heads?

Coping with Personalities that "Don't get along well with others."

Most people get along with others. There might be the odd bit of friction between a person or two, but for the most part, most people get along.

There is a subgroup of people however, that don’t seem to get along with almost anyone. These persons tend to project blame onto others for their conflict and may also cause others to feel guilty for not meeting expectations in the relationship. Further, some of these people while feigning interest in others, are really only interested in meeting their own needs.

These people can be manipulative, self-serving and very distressing to others. If they themselves are distressed, it is only due to the reaction of others, or for others not attending to their demands. They tend not to be distressed about their own behavior. In fact, when confronted on their own behavior, they are quite unable to see a problem with themselves and treat the confrontation as a serious attack.

Even if You Have No Symptoms, Could You Have High Blood Pressure?

The magic numbers for a healthy target blood pressure (BP) reading used to be 120/80. In 2003, that was reviewed and changed by a panel of medical experts, with a higher range determined to be within normal limits. High blood pressure (hypertension) was then defined as 140/90 or above, particularly for older adults 60 or over.

Those individuals with hypertension were advised to take medication(s) to keep their readings within that range. People with diabetes or kidney disease have lower target numbers (130/80) due to being at higher risk.

Tips for a Safe Fourth of July

Be a safe swimmer. Water sports and fireworks are two of the biggest pastimes for Fourth of July celebrations, and these are both linked to numerous deaths and injuries each year. Never swim alone, and make sure that kids' water play is adequately supervised at all times. Many drownings occur when parents and other adults are nearby, so always have a designated chaperone for water play and don't assume that others are watching the kids. Statistics show that most young children who drown in pools have been out of sight for less than five minutes.

How to Multitask as a Nurse Aide

What is Multitasking?

At some settings, nursing assistants are expected to take care of more than six patients in each shift. This is where your multitasking skills come in handy. Basically, multitasking is a talent to organize and execute two different types of tasks all at one time.

Yes! It is a Skill

There are no findings that nurse aides are provided with training on multitasking during the training classes. Accomplishing different tasks at one go is difficult. It totally depends on your mental and physical capacity to react to different things with equal control and panache. You will accumulate these skills as you spend some time in your occupation.

However, trying to finish two different types of works concurrently may slow you down. It will also restrict your brain to act to its fullest since you are trying to hit two birds with one stone. You will be more in stress and become exhausted very soon. Above all, it will lead to frustration if the outcome is not as expected.

13 Ways to be a Better Co-Worker

1. Say a cheery “Hello!” in the morning. Do you plod into the office, eyes down, shoulders slumped, and immediately start work? If so, you’re likely to find that co-workers ignore you (at best) or avoid you (at worst). Get into the habit of smiling and greeting everyone as you arrive in the morning or begin your shift. It’s amazing how fast this little courtesy can thaw chilly workplace relations.

2. Learn the art of small talk. Ask your co-workers about their interests – their favorite music, films, books, hobbies. Showing a genuine interest in them will make them feel comfortable around you. Talk about your life outside the office when it’s appropriate. This will remind the people you work with that you’re a person first, not just an employee or employer.

3. Ask what they think. People love to be asked their opinion, so go out of your way to ask, “What do you think is missing from this report?” or “How do you think I should handle this situation with X?” Then give the advice-giver a sincere thank you, even if the ideas are less than helpful.

4. Avoid gossip. You don’t want anyone talking about you behind your back, so return the favor.

10 Foods and Drinks You Crave in the Fall

Anyone want to grill out at the barbeque? Go out for ice cream? Share some fruity, ice-cold white wine? Not so much, huh? These things are all top on our food and drink list when summer starts, but there is something about cooler weather and the arrival of fall that changes things.

We stop thinking about beach outings, and instead focus on which ski resorts may be opening early. It somehow seems easier to really get into work or school, instead of daydreaming about playing in the sun. Baseball games start to mean more as we get closer to the magic numbers, and football becomes the water cooler talk in offices across the country.

It also seems that we start to crave different foods. Is advertising taking its toll on our palates? Or, does the body crave things that are in season because fresh food is actually more nutritious than canned or processed options?

"Fresh produce is always better for you than canned, but possibly more importantly, fruits and vegetables hit peak flavor when that crop is in season," said Sara Berzofsky (M.Ed, M.S. Nutrition) of Newtritionalyou.com. "Fall is the season for apples, cranberries, and pumpkins. Thus, it is no surprise that we see more of these products both at the market and in advertising starting in September/October."
