7 Types of Friends Every Woman Needs in Her Life

The ride or die friend

This friend is loyal to the core and the epitome of the friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
She can be depended on to be there with you to celebrate your victories and successes or offer a shoulder to cry or lean on. She’ll show up at your door with a pint of your favorite ice cream when someone breaks your heart, bring over chicken soup and magazines when you are down with the flu and no one else wants to be around you, and can always be counted on to come and pull through for you during life’s crisis.

She’s often the first one to extend an olive branch after the two of you fight because she values your friendship more than she does being right. She laughs with you, cries with you and stands up for you because that is what a great and true friend does. She is definitely a keeper and the kind of friend everyone should have!

The sensible, mature, responsible one

We all need that one level-headed friend who offers us great advice when we need it, helps keep us grounded and prevents us from acting like a fool when we feel like drunk-dialing an ex at 3:00am. She has an amazing way of making you think twice before you act and putting things into perspective.

Start the Year Right: Declutter Your Life

Excessive clutter is often a symptom and a cause of stress and can affect every facet of your life, from the time it takes you to do things to your finances and your overall enjoyment of life.  Clutter can distract you, weigh you down, and in general it invites chaos into your life.  Often times, however, tackling the clutter can seem an insurmountable task if you don’t know where or how to start.  By devoting a little of your time to getting rid of the clutter in your life and maintaining things relatively clutter-free , you’ll reap the rewards of pleasing living areas, reduced stress, and a more organized and productive existence.

The best way to tackle the decluttering of your home, your work space, and your life is to take things  one small step at a time.  Combined, small steps will lead to big improvements that will be easier to maintain over the long-run.  Here is a blueprint of how to start tackling that clutter and enjoying a less stressful life:

Your Work Area

If you want to be more productive and focused in your work, getting the clutter out of your work area is essential.

Start with your desk. Clear everything off the top of it and take everything out of the drawers. Assemble the items in piles on the floor.  Clean and wipe down your desk, and marvel at how pretty and clean it looks.

15 Habits that Will Totally Transform Your Productivity

People who manage to get a lot accomplished each day aren't super human, they've just mastered a few simple habits. Some may be easy to guess: Keep your desk organized and aim for around eight hours of sleep a night. But others, like taking a mid-day nap or complaining, might surprise you.

Here are 15 easy ways to make every day more productive:

1. Declutter your desk.

Messy work space:

Creativity may arise from chaos, but a litter-strewn office probably isn’t helping you get stuff done. "Attention is programmed to pick up what’s novel," says Josh Davis, director of research at the NeuroLeadership Institute and author of Two Awesome Hours. Visible files remind you of unfinished tasks. An unread book is temptation for procrastination. Even if you don’t think you’re noticing the disorder, it hurts your ability to focus.

Laughter Really is the Best Medicine

Laughter is your natural defense mechanism. It's a prescription from your “Humor Being” to cure the chaos that attacks you from day to day.
To describe what a Humor Being is, I have to first define what a sense of humor is. The dictionary says the word sense means “perception or awareness; and correct reasoning; or sound judgment.” The word humor means “turn of mind; to sooth temper or mood; or the mental quality that produces absurd or joyful ideas.” So we can say that a sense of humor is to be aware that you have a mental quality to turn your mind in an unusual way, or a need to produce joyful or absurd ideas that can sooth your very being.
Many truly successful and happy people had to overcome adversity of some kind. Inventors, discoverers, entrepreneurs, actors, athletes, artists and great minds of all kinds had to face major challenges and defy insurmountable odds on their journey toward success. But they also had an ongoing optimism to move forward. Each of them had an awareness, a perception, to shift their moods to produce joyful ideas and an ability to soothe their very being by using correct reasoning and sound judgment. This awareness or perception is by definition a sense of humor. The initiative and proficiency by which to utilize it, however, comes from what I call our Humor Being.

What are the Signs That You Have a Good Boss?

I have just made a mental list of all the bosses I have had in my forty years of work. Some were pretty good; others were simply awful. Nowadays, the latter are also in the majority. One survey has found that 77% of employees are stressed out at some point, because their bosses are bad!
Then, suddenly I found that I was a manger myself, so I became acutely aware of what makes a good boss. The greatest challenge was in managing staff and using my people skills effectively.
Here are 20 signs that you got a good boss.

1. Your boss reassures you

This may take the form of encouragement and stimulation to do even better. They both go hand-in-hand and the results from employees can be impressive. Once you are reassured that you are on the right track, then you can achieve anything.

2. Your boss does not micromanage

“Hire well, manage little.” —Warren Buffett
If a boss ignores the above quote, the likelihood is that he will not get much done. Employees’ reactions to micromanagement can range from demotivation to a feeling that they will never be allowed to work on their own. The boss who indulges in this feels he knows best and cannot trust the employee fully.

3. Your boss appreciates your skills

A great boss will soon become familiar with people’s talents and skills. It is a great asset when delegation has to be done.

Can Alzheimer's Disease Be Accelerated?

Fatty acid deposits in the brain may contribute significantly to the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease, researchers discovered in a recent study.

The discovery supports the theory that Alzheimer's disease is a metabolic brain disease similar to obesity and diabetes being peripheral metabolic diseases. Researchers suggest treatments for obesity that are under development could prove useful against Alzheimer's disease as well.

"We discovered that these fatty acids are produced by the brain -- that they build up slowly with normal aging -- but that the process is accelerated significantly in the presence of genes that predispose to Alzheimer's disease," said Karl Fernandes, a professor at the University of Montreal, in a press release. "In mice predisposed to the disease, we showed that these fatty acids accumulate very early on, at two months of age, which corresponds to the early twenties in humans. Therefore, we think that the build-up of fatty acids is not a consequence but rather a cause or accelerator of the disease."

8 Small Things You Do That Others Use to Judge Your Personality

From the moment two people meet, they're sizing each other up, looking for signs of qualities like honesty, intelligence, and altruism.

Whether it's a date or a job interview, the small stuff matters — from the firmness of your handshake to how often you check your phone.

We checked out the Quora thread, "What are the really small things that tell a lot about a person's psychology and personality?," and highlighted some of the most common behaviors people use to judge you.

1. Your handshake

Several Quora users admitted they judge people based on their handshake.
"Strong handshakes usually reflect a strong and confident character, whereas weak handshakes usually indicate a lack of confidence and are almost always a characteristic of people who would look for an easy way to do things," writes Julian Parge.

Research backs up the idea that your handshake can reveal certain aspects of your personality: One study found that people with firm handshakes were more likely to be extroverted and emotionally expressive and less likely to be shy and neurotic.

2. Whether you show up on time

11 Tips to De-stress Your Life

Being stressed isn’t a fun experience. On top of the physical symptoms, stress can lead to insomnia, depression and a decrease in work production, with serious implications for your personal and professional life. To avoid letting stress consume your life, here are 11 tips that I use to kick stress to the curb.

1. Identify triggers.

Melissa Eisler states on the Chopra Center website that “Recognizing the triggers to your stressful reactions is an important first step in managing your stress.” She suggests you can discover these triggers by asking obvious questions like “What stresses you out? And how do you react to it?”
After figuring out what exactly is working you up, you can create a list of your top triggers and then work on eliminating them if possible, or at least changing your reactions.
Related: 5 Ways to Stop Stress Before It Starts

2. Be healthy.

It’s been proven time and time again that one of the best ways to relieve stress is by being healthy. Whether it’s going for a walk, taking a yoga class, staying away from treats like doughnuts and getting a good night’s rest, taking care of your body is one of the most common and effective ways to reduce stress in your life.

The Skinny on Subscription Snack Boxes - The Latest Craze

They call it the fourth meal.

For many, snacking is the number one cause for derailed diets, unintentional calorie overloading and an increase in sugar or salt intake. But the snack is often the saving grace of the work day – the only problem is most of us are left with limited choices at the office vending machine.
Enter the subscription snack box – the latest online food craze that has businesses big and small betting on people looking for healthier snack options.

Silicon Valley-based company NatureBox has been leading the charge on the healthy snack front since its launch in 2012.

The idea for the company was born, in part, out of CEO and co-founder Gautam Gupta’s struggle with obesity. After teaching himself about nutrition and exercise in high school, Gupta lost 70 pounds, but struggled with finding snack options he felt good about eating when on the go.

“Twenty-five per cent of our daily calories come from snacking and we’ve found people will often say they don’t feel satisfied after they snack,” said NatureBox spokesperson Nicki Briggs. “So we thought it was a really big opportunity to make a difference.”

How to Carve out Time for Yourself

Do you ever find yourself longing for some time for yourself? Many of us are so busy with work, school, and home life that often there is no time left over to do something that you enjoy. What follows are some ways to carve out that essential time you need to slow down, enjoy life, and rejuvenate yourself.

Scheduling Time with Yourself

1. Evenings with Yourself. Try to save certain weeknights just for you. If others ask you to do things those nights, just tell them you have plans. Use the time for gardening, reading, exercise, thinking, or the ultimate luxury of doing nothing!

2. Monthly Treat. Schedule a treat for yourself once a month. It could be on your lunch break, a weekend, or it could be leaving work early. Maybe you get a spa treatment, go see a movie, a haircut, play golf, or whatever treat you’re always thinking about but rarely get to. Schedule it in and it will happen!

How to Get Your Weight in the Healthy Zone with National Healthy Weight Week

Diets don't work—healthy lifelong habits are what will get you weight loss, weight maintenance, and good health. Celebrate National Healthy Weight Week (January 19 to 25) by dropping the diet and picking up a few healthy habits instead.

The concept behind Healthy Weight Week is that dieting is harmful to your self-esteem. You diet because you view yourself as overweight. Then the punishment, deprivation, restricting calories, and avoiding happy hour starts. But if you are always hungry or feel deprived and view yourself as "fat,” then packing on the pounds is easy.

So what exactly is a “healthy” weight? Uncontrollable elements that affect weight are height, bone density, body type (endomorph, mesomorph, ectomorph), and body composition (the innate ratio of body muscle to fat). Muscle & Strength explains the different body types (shown below) and variations in exercise routine for body type.

Returning to the Gym Benefits New Moms

Has the new year also brought along a new bundle of joy? New moms may be finding that their 2015 resolution to get their body back post-baby is more difficult than they originally calculated.
According to Minerals Sports Club Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor Barbara Matchett, an average woman gains approximately 30 pounds during pregnancy. She admits it's difficult “having patience and realizing that it took nine months for your body to gain the weight and it will be a process. I think the hardest part is probably fitting it in your schedule. You have a new baby that requires all of your attention, but remember it's important to find time for you, too. If you have a good support system at home, don't be afraid to leave the baby for an hour or try to find a gym that has child care. Your health is crucial so you're there to take care of your baby.”

“I think it's a challenge,” Minerals Fitness Director Betty Tobin said. “You see celebrities on TV get their bodies back in 20 days after having a baby,” she said with a laugh, saying the time frame is slightly unrealistic.

Tobin said several new moms have returned to the gym recently to work on their new physique, one only days after giving birth.

Take Time to Recognize Activity Professionals

1/18-24/2015 is National Activity Professionals Week.

What if you already are an Activity Professional?

Sure, it's nice to go out to lunch and get presents - but in many cases, this does not happen. Rather than sit back and wait for the "royal treatment", use this week as an excuse to "toot your own horn". Consider the following ideas to recognize and promote the value of therapeutic activities:

1.Conduct an inservice, but create a celebratory atmosphere. Serve refreshments, decorate festively, and have door prizes. Provide information regarding the benefits of activities and create displays with materials and photographs. Give out promotional items related to NAPW.
2. Use some of the poems and writings about activities, listed on the "Poems and Silly Stuff" Page. My favorites are "The Activity Pest" and "Activities are...". Display them in common areas, send them to the families or read them at activity groups.
3. Create a video emphasizing the benefits of each activity. Set the video up in the lobby, play it continuously with a poster, tri-board or printed materials explaining NAPW.
4. Plan an "Activity Open House". Send out invitations and have display areas set up in your recreation room which emphasize the value of therapeutic activities.

Essential Career Tasks You Should Do Monthly

Just like you’re supposed to periodically clean out your refrigerator or wipe down your mirrors, there are certain essential tasks you should perform at work every month.

However, unlike cleaning, these “chores” will help you boost your reputation at work, keep your hireability high, maintain your connections, and be more productive. When’s the last time you could say that about dusting the furniture?

  1. Make sure you’re regularly talking to these five people. (Lifehacker)
  2. Send a monthly newsletter to keep your connections strong. (Tim’s Strategy)
  3. You should definitely have a formal check-in with your boss at least every 30 days. (Monster)
  4. Try to schedule a regular lunch with your co-workers—it can actually do wonders for your career. (Good Magazine)
For the last three tasks.

How to Give Your Working Memory a Tune-up

Working memory is like your brain's scratch pad, managing information as you go about your day. But our routine deluge of information can make us feel scatterbrained, like our working memory has too much to deal with. Here's how to tune-up your working memory and stay focused.
This post originally appeared on the Crew blog.

Sometimes when I'm trying to focus on a single task my mind can feel a bit like a pinball machine. No matter how hard I try to keep my thoughts in focus there's all these ideas wildly bouncing around and beating away at my limited attention.

Our brains can be fickle things and I'm sure every last one of us has experienced moments where we just can't seem to hold on to an idea for more than a few seconds.

All of a sudden while you're working on a project you start thinking about what you're going to make for dinner or a conversation you had with a friend a few nights ago. It's frustrating. All we want to do is focus on what we're working on and block out the rest. So how come these unwanted thoughts keep coming into our heads?

Don't Go Broke this Holiday Season

Your Guide to Frugal Cheer

Finding it hard to feel festive when all you can think about is that fat credit card bill or those student loans you're (still) paying off? Unfortunately, you're not alone: three in four American households are currently saddled with some kind of debt.
So, as we enter a new holiday season — with shoppers planning to spend even more than last year — here's how to affordably take part in the giving season and keep a lid on debt.

Plan Around Your Real Budget

Aiming to cap your holiday spend at $500? Map out your spending according to that exact figure, not on money you "think" is going to come rolling in. Avoid temptation by sticking to cash and prioritizing your budget.
First, set aside money for folks who deserve nice tips — the babysitter, dog walker, house cleaner, etc. — and buying a few gifts for the kids.

4 Reasons to Start Drinking Lemon Water Every Morning

Lemon water, warm or cooled, can be one of the most rewarding things you do for your body every morning. Among brushing your teeth and getting dressed, this morning detox ritual is one you definitely don’t want to leave behind.

1.) Detoxifying Cure
Lemon is a natural antiseptic and helps the liver by flushing the toxins and bacteria out of your body. The high amounts of Vitamin C in the lemon act as a potent antioxidant to clean out the system, especially when taken on an empty stomach.

2.) Weight Loss
Believe it or not, the cleansing properties of lemon get rid of extra internal waste in your colon. Think of lemon water as a stream going through your body. Unlike a pancake or muffin that requires chewing, digestion, absorption, etc., lemon juice goes straight to the liver, colon, and GI tract to cleanse your body. An added bonus is the pectin fibers in lemon, which help keep you fuller longer.

What is the Best Way to Wash Your Hands?

National Handwashing Awareness Week is December 1-7. Make sure you are washing your hands the right way to prevent the spread of cold and flu this season.

When you see that sign in the restroom with instructions on how to wash your hands, you can’t help but roll your eyes, right? It’s OK to admit it. We all know the best way to wash our hands and how important this simple act is to helping us stay healthy and avoid disease. At least that’s what many people think.
But are you really washing properly? Do you know why you are doing it? What is the recommended amount of time? What’s better: hand washing or hand sanitizer? Take a moment to answer the following questions to see if you have all the information necessary to take your health into your own hands this cold and flu season…your clean hands that is.

Handwashing: what is the best way to wash your hands?

Did you know that a third of Americans don’t wash their hands after using the restroom? Rule number one: wash your hands frequently, and always after using the restroom. Rub your entire hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds. This includes the backs of your hands and between your fingers. If there’s a hand towel available, grab one. The good thing about drying your hands with a clean towel is that you can use the towel to turn off the faucet.

What is the best way to reduce germs?

As simple as it may sound, it still holds true. Washing our hands frequently is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick during flu season and throughout the year.

9 Great Habits for Your Lunch Hour

It’s noon, and your stomach’s grumbling for lunch. You’ve got one hour to kill—work tasks on pause—so what do you do? And most important, is however you’re spending that time benefiting you in any way?
We asked nine entrepreneurs from the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), “What is one creative way entrepreneurs can get more out of their lunch break each day?” Here, they share their personal strategies:
1. Unplug.
Unplug completely during lunch. Even in the most hectic times, a clear head can provide a fresh perspective.
—Matthew Moisan, Moisan Legal, P.C.
2. Turn lunch hour into learn hour.
Take a break to learn something new. Get out of your standard work mode and pick up a new book, podcast or interview. It will help you refocus your thoughts and bring renewed energy to the second half of your workday.
—Neil Thanedar, LabDoor
3. Turn your phone off.
Make a rule to eat and talk only with those present with you during lunch and leave the phone turned off. Sharing a meal with a colleague, friend or staff member is great for relationship-building and creative thinking. This also shows the other person that they have your undivided attention, which is very rare these days.
