Forget 4-Leaf Clovers: Make Your Own Luck

You may know St. Patrick’s Day as an annual green-themed day of drinking beer, but at its core this holiday is really celebrating good luck and prosperity. Irish mythology and folklore is particularly wrapped up in good luck, from a saint snake charmer saving the island to little green leprechauns who bring pots of gold.

You may wonder sometimes why some entrepreneurs seem to have better luck than others, but the truth is you don’t need luck. You can make your own. Create your own luck with these three simple practices that seem to make every entrepreneur successful and prosperous -- no pot of gold required.

1. Always be prepared

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. You will have the opportunity to embark on many successful ventures, both personally and professionally, if you can keep your eyes and ears open for them.
Here’s a few ways to prepare yourself so you’re lucky the next time opportunity knocks:
  • Always have your phone or a business card on you. There’s nothing worse than meeting someone great for business, or for your personal life, and not having an easy way to give them your contact information.

The Easiest Way to Put the Healthies Foods in Your Normal Routine

Healthy Food #1: Lemons
Why They're Healthy:
— Just one lemon has more than 100 percent of your daily intake of vitamin C, which may help increase "good" HDL cholesterol levels and strengthen bones.
— Citrus flavonoids found in lemons may help inhibit the growth of cancer cells and act as an anti-inflammatory.
Quick Tip:
Add a slice of lemon to your green tea. One study found that citrus increases your body's ability to absorb the antioxidants in the tea by about 80 percent.

Healthy Food #2: Broccoli
Why It's Healthy:
— One medium stalk of broccoli contains more than 100 percent of your daily vitamin K requirement and almost 200 percent of your recommended daily dose of vitamin C — two essential bone-building nutrients.
— The same serving also helps stave off numerous cancers.
Quick Tip:
Zap it! Preserve up to 90 percent of broccoli's vitamin C by microwaving. (Steaming or boiling holds on to just 66 percent of the nutrient.)

How To Deal with Passive Aggressive People

Dealing with people who exhibit passive-aggressive behavior is easily one of the most challenging aspects of our social lives. Here's what you need to know about this annoying personality quirk and how you can handle people who express their hostility in indirect and backhanded ways.

Interacting with passive-aggressive (PA) people is something many of us are all too familiar with. As a behavior, it manifests in many different ways — some of them quite backhanded and subtle — which can make it difficult to recognize.

Simply put, passive-aggressiveness is a way of expressing hostility, albeit through typically muted, seemingly apathetic, and indirect channels of negative behavior. It can involve everything from the passive resistance of everyday social and work-related tasks (e.g. procrastination, learned helplessness, deliberate inefficiency, and forgetfulness) through to stubbornness, resentment, and contradictory behavior (e.g. appearing to be enthusiastic about something, but purposefully acting in a way that's unhelpful and sometimes damaging).

Returning to Work After Baby

Adjusting to life after having a baby is not easy. On top of learning how to take care of this tiny human, you also have to learn to juggle the numerous responsibilities you had before becoming a mother for the first, second or third time.

Some employers offer family or maternity leave for their colleagues who recently had children. The standard time off for a new mother is typically 6 weeks. During this time, the new working mom is allowed to spend this allotted break to bond with her new family, make arrangements for childcare, and (most importantly) rest.

Many of my friends are just now becoming mothers, and it appears we all “decided” to hop on this bandwagon at the same time in our late 30s.  But while they come from different walks of life, one thing I recognized about all of my girlfriends who returned to work after having a baby is just how difficult it really is.The main source of unease was not having to go back to work per se, but having to leave their new little one with a nanny, family member or in day care.

How to Know if You Are More Successful than You Think You Are

Here's the funny thing about success--no one can agree what the word means. The definition of the good life varies from person to person, as one individual prioritizes career glory while another values a nurturing home life.
That means there's no way to be successful without first deciding what you mean by the term. But it also means that, if you haven't spent time really reflecting on your personal definition of success in a while, you could actually be closer to achieving it than you suspect.
That's the uplifting message of a great recent Lifehack post by Carles Sabarich. In it, Sabarich contends that "lack of clarity can make it easy to believe that you are a failure, even when all the evidence in your life ... points to other conclusions." He goes on to offer a monster list of 25 tells that you're probably more successful than you currently feel. Here are 10 in brief to get you started.

1. You aren't controlled by your income.

"If you are able to go day-to-day without the worry that you won't have enough money to last until the end of the month, then you are most definitely a success!" declares Sabarich, offering readers a healthy dose of perspective.

5 Survival Tips for Working the Night Shift

Being the night shift nurse is a grueling job. Though, it is the shift many nurses start on in their career. I have worked as a labor and delivery nurse for the last 10 years, 8 of them on the night shift. I have come up with these 5 tips that helped me get through it with two kids, a husband, and a dog.

Schedule It Right

Many nurses, like me, are mothers. As a mother, you have many responsibilities and sleep is never a priority, especially on the night shift. No one will understand. You can tell your mother that you worked last night, and she will still want to go shopping at noon, thinking that was enough sleep. Let me tell you, it is not. I tried to explain it to my husband one time by saying, “OK, so if you go to bed at 10, can you get up and start your day at 2 am, or even worse, make dinner, check homework, and chase the toddler? He tried to understand.

When I worked my twelve-hour shifts, I would ALWAYS schedule myself three shifts in a row. Was that a lot? My goodness, it was. Was I exhausted? Of course! Then why three twelve hour shifts in a row?

Your body, at least in my case, never adapts to night shift. Three in a row made it easier because my body got “used” to the schedule on the second night, and even though it was so hard to get motivated for the third night, I knew after that I would be done. Though, you have to find what works best for you.

"Hi everyone! My name is Shaunte'. I'm 24 years old and am from Belle Fourche, SD. I currently work in Spearfish, SD. I'll go to school this next year at WDT out of Rapid City, SD to become an LPN. I've worked in assisted living facilities since I was 18 and immediately knew it was my calling so I am excited to take it one step further into a career I am so passionate about.

This class has been a great help in bettering my knowledge in the field of becoming a nursing assistant. It's very thorough yet still easy to understand. I've already learned many new things and am confident that once I have completed this course I will walk away from it being the best nursing assistant I am capable of. 15 Healthy Eating Habits that Work According to Scientists

From the Paleo diet to the 21-day challenge, there's a fad diet for practically everyone.
But as fun as they may seem, it's often difficult to stick with them for more than a few weeks, and as a result few people actually see any long-term results.
Rather than trying one of those, here are 15 science-backed habits that can help boost your health and may help with weight loss too.

Eat food you enjoy.

It may seem like the easiest way to lose weight is to stop eating the foods you overindulge in. But this can be short-sighted, Lisa Sasson, a New York University nutrition professor told Business Insider. "If you pick a diet with foods you don’t like, you’re doomed to fail," said Sasson. Food is a pleasurable experience; if you cut out all the foods you like, you probably won't stick to your plan.
And as studies continue to show, coming up with an eating regimen you can stick with is critical.

Portion sizes are key.

How Successful People Deal with Toxic People

Among friends, family and co-workers, there are those whose attitudes can be demeaning and toxic. It is difficult relating to some of these people and thus it becomes a challenge. So how do we get out from the hole and be masters of our own fates?
The best way is to learn from successful people how they have approached the same role of winning the war against toxic individuals.

1. They set limits

Toxic persons try to consume you and make you swim deep in their problems. They don’t want to see solutions so they can waste your time by pressuring you to join their pity party.
Successful people understand that there is a fine line between offering to listen to the problems and getting themselves involved too deep in the negative emotional twists of such complainers. That is why they set limits and distance themselves when necessary.

2. They don’t expect or request change

By expecting change, you lower your energy and create a resistance in people. Successful people do not want to be faced with a tone of disapproval, blame or rejection by a toxic person. So they simply suggest feedback and let them decide what they will do with it. They don’t demand actions or instant change.

3. They don’t get embroiled in fights

Successful people know how important it is to store energy. And when it comes to battling with a toxic person, they do well to manage their emotions.

CNA's: Put On Your Game Face

Guest Post: Melanie Fischer, RN
What does it mean to be a CNA?

Wow, that is a pretty wide open question. We can go down so many different paths as far as subject content goes.  However, I would like address how a CNA should conduct themselves.

First, let's take the title-CNA, which stands for Certified Nurse Aide.  As a CNA, you assist the nurse in patient or resident care, helping them with their every day needs.  States vary widely in certification curriculum, instructional hours, and CNA duties.  However, the overall picture is, you are one of the caretakers.

A CNA must care for the resident in a kind, caring, and loving manner.  A good CNA puts others needs ahead of their own, including frustrations over their personal and work lives.  Don’t let your personal frustrations interfere when you are with your resident.  Please leave your troubles and crisis at the door when you come to work.  We all have a heavy burden to carry in our personal lives but when we arrive at work, our purpose should be solely devoted to the residents right in front of us.

What I am trying to say is this: “put your game face on.”  Trust me, I realize this is difficult. But if we all work together to do this, our jobs would mean so much more to our patients. Our residents certainly deserve that.

Keep in mind, our residents are paying us to take care of them!  If you pay for a service - whether it be in a restaurant or otherwise, how do you expect to be treated? What do you expect from the service?  That is eye opening when you really think about it.

Be the example and set the bar high. See how many co-workers you can encourage to start following in your footsteps.  Remember, it can all begin with you.  Use this motto in your everyday life as well!  You would be surprised how you’re life changes for the better!
  • Be Positive
  • Be Kind
  • Be Honest
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Giving
  • Be Polite
  • Be Caring
  • Be Flexible
  • Be complimentary
  • Be a good leader
  • Be appreciative
  • Be Thankful
  • Be Empathetic

One aspect that I often hear from student CNA’s is the misconception of the true picture of the hard work it is to be a CNA.  Being a CNA can be exhausting physically, mentally, and emotionally.  Don’t get me wrong, it is so rewarding. But with the strains of the work, a CNA needs to stay on the positive side of life and don’t forget to keep the humor.  I’m not talking about making fun of others but having fun with the residents.  Laughter is the best medicine and it doesn’t come with a price tag.

A CNA devotes his or her working hours to the people they are caring for.  Give it 110%.  I like to tell CNA’s, negativity spreads like wildfire.  Keep it positive!  Conduct yourself with the highest of integrity!  See the best in the day, in the resident, in the facility, and in your co-workers!

Living with Parkinson's

Cognitive Impairment
Another troublesome symptom of Parkinson’s is mild cognitive impairment. Many people with Parkinson’s are surprised to find that they feel distracted or disorganized, or have difficulty planning and carrying through tasks. It may be harder to focus in situations that divide their attention, like a group conversation. When facing a task or situation on their own, a person with PD may feel overwhelmed by having to make choices. They may also have difficulty remembering information, or have trouble finding the right words when speaking. For some people these changes are merely annoying, for others they interfere with work or with managing household affairs.
To some degree, cognitive impairment affects most people with Parkinson’s. The same brain changes that lead to motor symptoms can also result in slowness in memory and thinking...Read more here

Nurse Assistants: Unsung Heroes in the Healthcare Industry

Always on the first day of National Nursing Assistants Week, it is National Career Nurse Assistants Day. This day is set aside to recognize the nursing assistants who dedicate their lives to the well-being of others for 5 to as many as 58 years.

Nursing assistants many times work in hospitals and nursing homes performing everyday living tasks for the elderly, chronically ill or rehabilitation patients who cannot care for themselves.  A more in-depth training and qualification that covers a wider scope of responsibility is indicated by government certification.  The state distributes these certification exams and the classes to study for them are offered by the American Red Cross as well as other providers.
On this day, we want to THANK these people for the wonderful job that they do and the very special care that they give to those in need.

National Career Nurse Assistants Day, an “unofficial” National holiday, is sponsored by the National Network of Career Nursing Assistants.

Celebrate Nursing Assistant Week, June 11-18, 2015

Now as never before, attention is being directed to care of our elder and disabled citizens and greater attention also is directed to the workers who provide hands-on-care and caring.
The 38th annual National Nursing Assistants’ Week provides a timely opportunity to foster and showcase the wonderful things that can happen for residents and workers when we join together in planning your special Week, “Nursing Assistants @ the Heart of Care.”

Fun projects can also be educational. NA Week Projects for 2015 include Recognition events, Mayor Proclamations, memos to families and news releases; and also includes Person Centered  Care Programs such as “Partnerships: Meeting the Future with Skill and Confidence;”   We also continue the focus on Safe Lifting and decreasing worker injuries.
In order to make a difference, we need to seek out and involve our role models, peers, supervisors, clients, families, community, legislators, public policy officials, media and others.

WeCareOnline June Staff Highlight - Cindy Gaschler

This month we get to meet Cindy Gaschler.

Cindy has worked in the healthcare field for 15 years. She began her career as a CNA, then completed her LPN, and continued with an ADN degree.  She functioned as a Long Term Care charge nurse, Inpatient Rehabilitation nurse, MDS Coordinator, and Director of Nursing.

Following this she re-enrolled in college to obtain a BSN while performing duties of Human Resources, Staff Development Coordinator, Risk Management, Health Information Management, and Senior Living Manager. She is a certified clinical instructor for the state of Kansas for Certfied Nurse Aide,Certified Med Aide, Activity Director and Social Service Designee.

She is married with 3 children and lives in a rural area 10 miles from the nearest town. Cindy enjoys the outdoors. She has horses, dogs, too many cats, and an enormous garden that always wants attention.

With her years of experience in the heath care field, Cindy believes that it is best to focus on the person. Before you help the person, take the time to enjoy him or her without distraction.

Cindy feels blessed to have the ability to work with students both online teaching the Activity Director and Social Service Designee courses and face to face during their clinical experience in Kansas. She also enjoys networking with more northern states online and by phone.  She assists with enrollments, invoicing, and basic technical issues.  She also works with marketing and directs new users in the services available through WeCareOnline.

The biggest change she has seen in the health care industry has been the shift from direct care to documentation. This also correlates with the shift to electronic documentation over paper charting.

On Cindy's desk, the one item that would be noticed without fail is her pencil sharpener. Her children felt an office is not complete without an electric pencil sharpener with the widest variety of color, foil, and decorated pencils ever noted from any party store!  (She never gets to use it because they do not allow her the opportunity to experience a dull pencil.  They are dutifully sharpened by one or all of them daily whether needed or not.)

7 Steps to Getting Promoted

You have been in the same position for years. You love the company you work for, your commute is great and you even enjoy your co-workers. But more often than you care to think about, the all too common email from the boss, copied to everyone in the company, arrives in your in-box: "It is my pleasure to announce the well deserved promotion," of your co-worker in the cubicle attached to yours.

"I come to work and stay to myself, I keep my head down and my mouth shut. Why do I keep getting overlooked and not promoted?" If you have found yourself saying - or even thinking these kinds of things...THAT'S WHY YOU ARE NOT GETTING PROMOTED!

Gone are the days that employees are "tapped on the shoulder" for promotion simply by showing up to work and not making waves. Employers want to see passion, leadership, a "what ever it takes" attitude and a solution-oriented team player poised for promotion. Today's work environment requires employees to do more with less and often perform work that was previously accomplished by two or three employees, and they want to see the work accomplished without whining, complaining or having a fit.
