Your Strongest Friendship May Be a Long Distance One

1. Time together is so special.

We see one another so rarely that any time together is a gift. There is no room for small spats or any kind of conflict because every minute that goes by is another minute till we have to say goodbye again. Every second counts. We are so cautious never to waste time on anything but loving, supporting and listening to one another.

2. We’re really comfortable with the fact that we have other friends.

I have had friends in the past who need constant reassurance that I like them best of all. I have been that friend a lot, too, in some of my friendships, but never with any of my faraway friends. When you’re in a long-distance friendship, you can’t expect that from somebody. Of course we have other friends. Thank god you have other friends. There’s no need to constantly confirm our definitive friend ranking because we know that long-distance friends are on a different list altogether.

3. There is a bigger freedom for growth.

When I met my best friend, we both had braces and bad taste in music.

How to Know if You Are More Successful than You Think You Are

Here's the funny thing about success--no one can agree what the word means. The definition of the good life varies from person to person, as one individual prioritizes career glory while another values a nurturing home life.
That means there's no way to be successful without first deciding what you mean by the term. But it also means that, if you haven't spent time really reflecting on your personal definition of success in a while, you could actually be closer to achieving it than you suspect.
That's the uplifting message of a great recent Lifehack post by Carles Sabarich. In it, Sabarich contends that "lack of clarity can make it easy to believe that you are a failure, even when all the evidence in your life ... points to other conclusions." He goes on to offer a monster list of 25 tells that you're probably more successful than you currently feel. Here are 10 in brief to get you started.

1. You aren't controlled by your income.

"If you are able to go day-to-day without the worry that you won't have enough money to last until the end of the month, then you are most definitely a success!" declares Sabarich, offering readers a healthy dose of perspective.

How To Balance Childhood Development and Digital Devices

A growing body of literature is now addressing the collision of the digital age with the rapidly advancing sciences of parenting, brain development and reading acquisition.

In March the Deseret News highlighted a new book by Dan Willingham at the University of Virginia on raising kids who enjoy reading. More recently the Deseret News spoke with Dana Suskind, a surgeon at the University of Chicago and director of the Thirty Million Words Initiative, which focuses on getting parents and caregivers to build a richer verbal environment for very young children.

“Tap, Click & Read: Growing Readers in a World of Screens,” by Lisa Guernsey and Michael Levine, now takes its place on this bookshelf. It looks at how parents, caregivers and teachers can navigate digital media devices, using them to enhance learning.

Alzheimer's Signs and Symptoms: What to Expect

Common symptoms: When they happen, why they happen, and what you can do

Mild-stage Alzheimer's symptoms

During mild-stage Alzheimer's, your loved one will likely be able to manage his or her basic self-care -- what experts refer to as activities of daily living (ADLs) and communicate with you and others fairly well. However, problems with memory or other mental functioning will begin interfering with your loved one's ability to manage instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) -- complex skills usually learned during the teenage years -- such as managing finances, driving, meal preparation, and managing medications.
Memory symptoms
The ability to retain immediate memories will increasingly affect your loved one's short-term thinking. Click on any of the symptoms, below, to learn more about what to expect and what to do:

8 Questions the Smartest Candidates Ask in Interviews

More stressful than Christmas shopping. More necessary than a Netflix account. The interview — to many, the most evil necessity.

For those who aren’t so inclined, the interview process feels like running against the wind — with an open parachute strapped to your back. But, for livelihood’s sake, we must be successful in interviews. Although interviews are primarily employers asking you questions and you giving your best answers, the questions that you ask can sway the interview as much as the answers that you give.
Here are some questions to ask to help you show your interviewers that you have what it takes. Just remember that the interview is a two-way street — you are interviewing the company as much as they are interviewing you. If you join their team, it should be in a mutually beneficial relationship.

1. Why is your company a good fit for me?

This question is spunky, so know your audience well before asking. It shows that you aren’t desperate and willing to settle for any job. You refuse to undersell yourself — you have something valuable to offer and you know how much you are worth.

15 Habits that Will Totally Transform Your Productivity

People who manage to get a lot accomplished each day aren't super human, they've just mastered a few simple habits. Some may be easy to guess: Keep your desk organized and aim for around eight hours of sleep a night. But others, like taking a mid-day nap or complaining, might surprise you.

Here are 15 easy ways to make every day more productive:

1. Declutter your desk.

Messy work space:

Creativity may arise from chaos, but a litter-strewn office probably isn’t helping you get stuff done. "Attention is programmed to pick up what’s novel," says Josh Davis, director of research at the NeuroLeadership Institute and author of Two Awesome Hours. Visible files remind you of unfinished tasks. An unread book is temptation for procrastination. Even if you don’t think you’re noticing the disorder, it hurts your ability to focus.

Laughter Really is the Best Medicine

Laughter is your natural defense mechanism. It's a prescription from your “Humor Being” to cure the chaos that attacks you from day to day.
To describe what a Humor Being is, I have to first define what a sense of humor is. The dictionary says the word sense means “perception or awareness; and correct reasoning; or sound judgment.” The word humor means “turn of mind; to sooth temper or mood; or the mental quality that produces absurd or joyful ideas.” So we can say that a sense of humor is to be aware that you have a mental quality to turn your mind in an unusual way, or a need to produce joyful or absurd ideas that can sooth your very being.
Many truly successful and happy people had to overcome adversity of some kind. Inventors, discoverers, entrepreneurs, actors, athletes, artists and great minds of all kinds had to face major challenges and defy insurmountable odds on their journey toward success. But they also had an ongoing optimism to move forward. Each of them had an awareness, a perception, to shift their moods to produce joyful ideas and an ability to soothe their very being by using correct reasoning and sound judgment. This awareness or perception is by definition a sense of humor. The initiative and proficiency by which to utilize it, however, comes from what I call our Humor Being.

What are the Signs That You Have a Good Boss?

I have just made a mental list of all the bosses I have had in my forty years of work. Some were pretty good; others were simply awful. Nowadays, the latter are also in the majority. One survey has found that 77% of employees are stressed out at some point, because their bosses are bad!
Then, suddenly I found that I was a manger myself, so I became acutely aware of what makes a good boss. The greatest challenge was in managing staff and using my people skills effectively.
Here are 20 signs that you got a good boss.

1. Your boss reassures you

This may take the form of encouragement and stimulation to do even better. They both go hand-in-hand and the results from employees can be impressive. Once you are reassured that you are on the right track, then you can achieve anything.

2. Your boss does not micromanage

“Hire well, manage little.” —Warren Buffett
If a boss ignores the above quote, the likelihood is that he will not get much done. Employees’ reactions to micromanagement can range from demotivation to a feeling that they will never be allowed to work on their own. The boss who indulges in this feels he knows best and cannot trust the employee fully.

3. Your boss appreciates your skills

A great boss will soon become familiar with people’s talents and skills. It is a great asset when delegation has to be done.

How the Wrong People Get Promoted

Have you ever quit a job just to get away from a bad boss? If you have, it turns out you’re in sizable company. According to a April 2015 Gallup study, one in two U.S. workers have at some point in their career felt compelled to make that same difficult choice.

That the business world may be filled with managers who unwittingly drive their people away is at the heart of Gallup’s 50-plus page report "State Of The American Manager: Analytics And Advice For Leaders." What the research reveals is that organizations consistently choose the wrong people for management roles, and pay dearly for it through poor engagement and costly turnover—and the inevitable decline in overall performance.

But Gallup also discovered what distinguishes the very best managers—new and truly groundbreaking insight into the talents, motivations, and practices of bosses who make workers want to stay.

Here are five of the most significant findings of the report:

1. The Majority Of Managers Are Wrong For Their Roles

Perhaps the most important—and disruptive—conclusion from the study is that too many companies have a flawed methodology for selecting people into management.
How? They base hiring and promotion decisions on an employee’s past experience, and then reward them by giving them an entirely different role.

What Job Should You Have if You Want to Make the World a Better Place?

Surely you’ve heard that if you love your job, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
That’s perhaps no truer than if the role you adore also happens to help make the world a better place.

Eager to find out which employees are most satisfied with how their work benefits society at large, PayScale uncovered which titles translate into meaningful roles and also earn more than the median salary for workers in the United States.
And considering that half of U.S. nonprofits plan on creating new jobs this year, according to a recent Nonprofit HR report, there's a better chance you can land at least a couple of these meaningful roles.

8 Small Things You Do That Others Use to Judge Your Personality

From the moment two people meet, they're sizing each other up, looking for signs of qualities like honesty, intelligence, and altruism.

Whether it's a date or a job interview, the small stuff matters — from the firmness of your handshake to how often you check your phone.

We checked out the Quora thread, "What are the really small things that tell a lot about a person's psychology and personality?," and highlighted some of the most common behaviors people use to judge you.

1. Your handshake

Several Quora users admitted they judge people based on their handshake.
"Strong handshakes usually reflect a strong and confident character, whereas weak handshakes usually indicate a lack of confidence and are almost always a characteristic of people who would look for an easy way to do things," writes Julian Parge.

Research backs up the idea that your handshake can reveal certain aspects of your personality: One study found that people with firm handshakes were more likely to be extroverted and emotionally expressive and less likely to be shy and neurotic.

2. Whether you show up on time

Will Your Interview Answers Get You Hired?

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook, describes his hiring process this way: "I will only hire someone to work directly for me if I would work directly for that person."

Zuckerberg's comment illustrates an overlooked, yet fundamental, truth about hiring--people are ultimately looking for someone they want to work with.

This is why companies of all types will ask you the same five questions.
Human nature ensures interviewers return to these questions time and again to find out if you're someone they want to have down the hall.

Your ability to wow the interviewer and land the job hinges on how well you answer these questions.
Fear not! I've provided perfect answers to the five questions you will be asked every time you interview.

How Successful People Deal with Toxic People

Among friends, family and co-workers, there are those whose attitudes can be demeaning and toxic. It is difficult relating to some of these people and thus it becomes a challenge. So how do we get out from the hole and be masters of our own fates?
The best way is to learn from successful people how they have approached the same role of winning the war against toxic individuals.

1. They set limits

Toxic persons try to consume you and make you swim deep in their problems. They don’t want to see solutions so they can waste your time by pressuring you to join their pity party.
Successful people understand that there is a fine line between offering to listen to the problems and getting themselves involved too deep in the negative emotional twists of such complainers. That is why they set limits and distance themselves when necessary.

2. They don’t expect or request change

By expecting change, you lower your energy and create a resistance in people. Successful people do not want to be faced with a tone of disapproval, blame or rejection by a toxic person. So they simply suggest feedback and let them decide what they will do with it. They don’t demand actions or instant change.

3. They don’t get embroiled in fights

Successful people know how important it is to store energy. And when it comes to battling with a toxic person, they do well to manage their emotions.

How to Deal with On-The-Job Bickering and Backstabbing

People in groups, especially in professionally structured groups, tend to bicker with each other about the way things should be run. It’s human nature for people to have differing opinions that lead to arguments. No workplace would be complete without a little bickering and backstabbing. But it gets old, tends to solve nothing and creates a counterproductive work environment.
Here are some tips on avoiding it:

1. The best thing to do is to stay busy and try to avoid the controversy. Why bother with it? There are sick people who are suffering all around you. Don’t waste your time dealing with “political” intrigue. Stick to your tasks. Do the best job that you can do, and stay away from the gossip machine.

2. If you’re frustrated with a coworker, you may need to vent. If you feel the need to discuss these issues with others, make sure to vent to the appropriate people—your family and friends outside of the workplace. Don’t vent to your boss or openly to other coworkers unless you’re going to offer constructive criticism.

3. If the gossip starts to fly and you are there in the middle, don’t engage. Excuse yourself or change the subject.

4. Are you being asked your opinion on a coworker? Refuse to answer. Simply state that you don’t take sides. You’ll be known as a neutral party, and people may stop trying to engage you in these fruitless undertakings.

How to Care for a Parent After a Stroke

When an elderly parent is recovering from a stroke, there is perhaps no more helpful advice for family caregivers than “Expect the unexpected.”

“Every stroke is different,” says David Siegelman, Director of Rehabilitation at The Hebrew Home in Riverdale by RiverSpring Health in the New York City area. “People can experience vastly different effects based on such factors as the type, location and severity of the stroke.”

Stroke After-Effects

Among the most common after-effects of a stroke are hemiplegia or hemiparesis, which is paralysis or weakness of one side of the body.

“This is what people most often associate with a stroke,” Siegelman says, “but depending upon its location, a stroke also may affect balance, vision or communication. The inability to communicate is often a major issue that people experience immediately after a stroke. They may lose their ability to speak or they’ll use words that don’t make sense. They may develop swallowing difficulties, also called dysphagia.”

The Skinny on Subscription Snack Boxes - The Latest Craze

They call it the fourth meal.

For many, snacking is the number one cause for derailed diets, unintentional calorie overloading and an increase in sugar or salt intake. But the snack is often the saving grace of the work day – the only problem is most of us are left with limited choices at the office vending machine.
Enter the subscription snack box – the latest online food craze that has businesses big and small betting on people looking for healthier snack options.

Silicon Valley-based company NatureBox has been leading the charge on the healthy snack front since its launch in 2012.

The idea for the company was born, in part, out of CEO and co-founder Gautam Gupta’s struggle with obesity. After teaching himself about nutrition and exercise in high school, Gupta lost 70 pounds, but struggled with finding snack options he felt good about eating when on the go.

“Twenty-five per cent of our daily calories come from snacking and we’ve found people will often say they don’t feel satisfied after they snack,” said NatureBox spokesperson Nicki Briggs. “So we thought it was a really big opportunity to make a difference.”

10 Hard to Learn Skills that Pay Off Forever

The best things in life may be free, but that doesn't mean they won't take time, sweat, and perseverance to acquire.
That's especially the case when it comes to learning important life skills.

In an effort to ascertain which talents are worth the investment, one Quora reader posed the question: What are the hardest and most useful skills to learn?
We've highlighted our favorite takeaways.

1. Time management

Effective time management is one of the most highly valued skills by employers. While there is no one right way, it's important to find a system that works for you and stick to it, Alina Grzegorzewska explains.

"The hardest thing to learn for me was how to plan," she writes. "Not to execute what I have planned, but to make so epic a to-do list and to schedule it so thoroughly that I'm really capable of completing all the tasks on the scheduled date."

2. Empathy

"You can be the most disciplined, brilliant, and even wealthy individual in the world, but if you don't care for or empathize with other people, then you are basically nothing but a sociopath," writes Kamia Taylor.

6 Creative Activities That Will Make Senior Residents Smile

The best assisted living communities make it a priority to have an energetic and creative activities director on their staff.  This individual is tasked with keeping residents busy and happy and stimulated. A good activities director will continually ask residents and their loved ones for input so that the calendar is filled with a well-rounded range of assisted living activities designed to engage residents of all different abilities and interests and to reflect their own interests as community members. Assisted living activities are important for more than just fun and games, though. One study of more than 5,500 participants aged 65 years or older concluded that stimulating leisure activities were significantly associated with a reduced risk of dementia.

Putting a smile on resident’s faces is not too hard with a fun mix of activities. They don’t have to be expensive or complicated. Here are five ideas for creative assisted living activities.

1.      Barbeque  Throw a southern barbeque party. Tell the women and men to dress in vacation resort clothes. Fire up the Bubba barbeque pit and serve your best barbeque ribs, pork shoulders and whole hog.

2.      Concert under the stars Beautiful summer weather brings the ability to invite residents outside to a common area and put on a live music concert. Hire a duo that plays music most residents will recognize and enjoy. Serve snacks, cookies, punch and wine –if allowed in the assisted living residence – and let the music flow and the dancing go.
