October: Learn how you can help with Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.

The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help find breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved.

How can National Breast Cancer Awareness Month make a difference?

We can use this opportunity to spread the word about steps women can take to detect breast cancer early.
Here are just a few ideas:
  • Ask doctors and nurses to speak to women about the importance of getting screened for breast cancer.
  • Encourage women ages 40 to 49 to talk with their doctors about when to start getting mammograms.
  • Organize an event to talk with women ages 50 to 74 in your community about getting mammograms every 2 years.

Too Busy to Clean Your House? Read More for some great easy tips.

Mothers these days have a lot on our plates. Between work, school, family matters and keeping the house clean, it’s a wonder more women don’t go stark raving mad. It seems that there is an endless request list of things to do, and not enough hours in the day to do them.
However, we are here to help. Don’t get overwhelmed and frustrated. Instead, carve out a few minutes from your very busy day to read this guide. We’ve got everything you need to know in this busy mom’s guide to house cleaning.

1. Clean as You Go.
Don’t let the mess build up, clean up a little at a time. While you’re cooking dinner, load the dishes you use into the dish washer right after you use them. If you notice toys, school books or articles of clothing laying on the ground, pick them up right away.

2. Teach the Kids.
It takes a lot of work to keep a house clean – don’t feel as though you must do it all yourself.

10 Things Bosses Never Tell Employees, But Should

Even if you're an exceptional boss -- and here's how to tell if you're an exceptional boss --there’s a lot you don’t know about your employees.
There’s also a lot employees don’t know about you.
Here are a few things bosses wish they could say to their employees... but never do:
1. "I really do care whether you like me."
I want you to like me. When I come off like a hard-ass who doesn’t care about your opinions, it’s mostly because I'm insecure or uncertain of my authority.
If I’m the owner, my business is an extension of myself. If I’m your boss, the company is at least partly an extension of myself. So I want you to like your job.
And I definitely want you to like me-- whether it seems like it or not.
2. "I don't think I know everything."
A few people stepped in, without being asked, and made a huge difference in my professional life. I will always be grateful to them.
So I don’t offer you advice because I think I’m all knowing or all-powerful. I see something special in you, and I’m repaying the debt I owe to the people who helped me.

8 Ways to Make Friends at Work

Making friends at work (or anywhere else) is easy. All you need do is adapt the timeless wisdom of "How to Win Friends and Influence People" to our technologically-sophisticated workplace.  Here's my take on this:

1. Smile, with your body and mind.  Putting a smile on your face draws people to you, but only if it's genuine. Smile on the inside first, then let that feeling express itself on your face. (More on this: Daily Habits to Make You Happier)  BTW, smiling works even if the other person can't see your face (just ask anyone who cold calls); so take heed when you're online.

2. Make the other person feel important.  Technology drives globalization, which can make regular folk feel small.  Since friendship is something you give to (rather than get from) people, there's no better gift than treating people as if they're they are more important that you are.  (Which they are, if you're their friend.)

3. Be genuinely curious.  People love to talk about themselves. Your curiosity gives them the permission to do so without wondering if they're being boring.  This is true regardless of the medium, so asking about (and caring about) what's going on in people's lives is a good way to make them feel good.

Moms: Tips for Boosting Your Energy

Has the word "energy" disappeared from your vocabulary? Whether you have infants, toddlers, or school-age children, keeping up with the kids on limited sleep can be seriously exhausting. To kiss that constantly drained feeling goodbye, give these six energy-boosting strategies recommended by our members a whirl.

1. Pop a Good Multivitamin

One of the simplest energy tricks in the book is ramping up your daily nutrient intake. As Claudia L. advises, "Take a good nutritional multivitamin/supplement. Most of us don't get the proper nutrition and vitamins from our foods. That has helped me tremendously." Some women's multivitamins are even specifically tailored to improve energy and alertness through B vitamins and guarana.

2. Get Off the Sugar Roller Coaster

Many readers, including Jennifer F., find their energy levels are boosted by "eating a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, whole grains, and fresh fruit and vegetables

Healthy Back to School Dinners Starts with Stocking the Right Foods

September means back to school. Parents and children have cleaned out closets and are ready for a new academic year with fresh school supplies.

This is also the time to think about supplying the correct nutrients to keep the body and mind working at their best. Children need nutritious breakfasts and packed lunches, and families need to eat healthy dinners at home. So this may be a good time to give your kitchen a makeover.
This is the first in a series of articles to help you create a kitchen that is equipped to prepare balanced meals for your family.

Let’s start with the pantry. It is important to stock your pantry with staple items that help you fix a quick nutritious meal at home without too much effort.

Whole grains: Whole grains such as quinoa, barley, bulgur, brown rice and oats are important sources of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Stock up on pasta made from whole grains, and use whole grain flours to make quick breads and pancakes.

How to Get Involved: Childhood Cancer Month

Every year, thousands of children across America are diagnosed with cancer  an often life threatening illness that remains the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 15.  The causes of pediatric cancer are still largely unknown, and though new discoveries are resulting in new treatments, this heartbreaking disease continues to scar families and communities in ways that may never fully heal.

This month, we remember the young lives taken too soon, stand with the families facing childhood cancer today, and rededicate ourselves to combating this terrible illness.

While much remains to be done, our Nation has come far in the fight to understand, treat, and control childhood cancer.  Thanks to ongoing advances in research and treatment, the 5 year survival rate for all childhood cancers has climbed from less than 50 percent to 80 percent over the past several decades.
